Free Educational Events in Germantown This Weekend

Looking for something free and educational to do with your kids this weekend? Here’s what’s happening around Germantown on October 5, 6, and 7.

Friday, October 5, is an early release day for MCPS students. Germantown Library (19840 Century Blvd.) is making it easy to keep them busy that afternoon with School’s Out Early?, a varied program offering games, LEGO, and possibly even a movie. Everything begins at 2 p.m. Then, on Saturday, October 6, families can head back to the library for Family Storytime at 10:30 a.m. Visit the library’s website for more information about both events.

Also on Saturday, October 6, the annual Fall Fest will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Plum Gar Community Recreation Center (19561 Scenery Dr.). Kids can engage in fall-themed arts and crafts, listen to live music, play carnival games, paint pumpkins, visit a petting zoo, and much more. Food vendors will be on site.

If your child likes to build, head to Home Depot in Milestone Center (21010 Frederick Rd.) on Saturday, October 6, for a hands-on workshop to celebrate National Fire Safety Month. During the workshop, children and their parents will build a model fireboat and then decorate it with paint and stickers. All kids get to keep their craft and they will receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last. The workshop will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Visit the store’s workshops page online for more details.

Also on Saturday, October 6, Michaels in Milestone Center (20902 Frederick Road) invites children ages 5 to 11 and their parents to a Michaels Kids Party for activities and the chance to win a prize. The party will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Visit the Michaels Classes & Events page online for more details.

On Sunday, October 7, families are invited to the annual Waters Landing Drive Fall Cleanup. The group will meet at the corner of Waters Landing Drive and Whitechurch Circle at 4 p.m. and pick up as much trash as possible in an hour. Participants are encouraged to bring extra bags and gloves.
